Sol y Sombra has been Dundee’s original and favourite tapas bar since it opened in 2011. Born out of a childhood love for Spain and Spanish food we have created a menu of fresh, authentic and simple tapas. The aim is to recreate the atmosphere of a typical Spanish family meal, requiring everyone to share and enjoy the meal as one.
Our chefs use the morning’s freshly delivered ingredients to decide which dishes will be served that day. We can cater to all dietary requirements and pride ourselves in offering truly delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes. Our lunch set menu with cold and hot dishes is £22.50 per person and dinner is £31 per person (not including drinks and desserts). We also have the option of Hot tapas only with bread and Aioli for £17.50 for lunch and £26 at Dinner.
We have dining areas on the ground floor and first floor which boast a wide range of gins, beers, wines, spirits, cocktails and our signature sangria. Our expert staff are always on hand to help you find the perfect drink to accompany your tapas.
Our vouchers are very popular and the perfect gift for any occasion. They can be purchased online or in the restaurant. If you’d like to put a smile on someone’s face with a Sol y Sombra gift voucher please click here.
Fabulous meal I must admit that after seeing the owners Facebook post and then reading the Trip Advisor reviews from last week, I was considering cancelling our booking. After being a regular before the new owners took over, this was always my favourite restaurant. I am delighted to say that I’m glad we didn’t cancel. Firstly I love the new decor upstairs, it’s really classy and warm. The welcome we got was friendly and the service was good too. We went for the cold and hot Tapas and we were not disappointed. The selection was really tasty and varied. My only gripe was I felt a little bowl of salad is not a tapas but other than that, it was great. When the hot food started coming out, we could not believe how many prawns we got. The chicken skewers were tasty and we got a bowl of patatas bravas each and a selection of other hot dishes. We could not finish it all so portion wise, we had more than enough. The only thing I wish we had done differently was order a bottle of wine but instead we opted for 2 glasses of Tempranillo and it just didn’t taste like Tempranillo so not sure if the wine by the glass is different? Anyway, we thoroughly enjoyed the meal and glad we went, we will be back.

The food is always delicious and the staff are always very welcoming and great at explaining the choices and each dish when they arrive. One of our favourite places to eat, infact we have to limit ourselves so as not to seem too needy 😅 we are lucky to live so close to such a cool place!

Drinks were quick to be ordered and arrived, we opted to go for the full tapas and it did not disappoint! Cold tapas were delicious, hot tapas arrived around 20 minutes later, which again, were delicious! Staff talked us through all the dishes, checked on us regularly and even wrapped up a wee doggy bag for my granny. Will absolutely be back - thanks again to all the staff, both out front and in the kitchen for making our Mother’s Day treat so special!

Also, lovely personal service from a family business that just wants people to have a great experience. Great explanations of the different dishes too. Highly recommend.

Better than ever We went as a group of 3, one veggie, one unable to eat gluten and one “normal” We ordered full tapas which is a selection of hot and cold dishes with bread, olives and oils. We also had a jug of white sangria and 3 passion fruit martinis. The food was plentiful, served at a decent time and with no long waits. Each dish was explained to us and the team couldn’t have done enough to help. She was bright and chipper. We had a lovely evening and would go back, I think the new pick and mix selections would be great for lunch or midweek. The places was busy and the owner was chatting to tables. Overall a lovely family business who’s is offering a really special experience. We will be back

Keeping a fantastic balance of what’s always been and also some new dishes/touches. Will definitely be back and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to friends/family.

We managed to get a seat at the bar and were offered a glass of Prosecco while we settled in. The DJ and Dancers gave an amazing atmosphere, and even got a lot of us up dancing. The staff were all fantastic and attentive, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year.

We were not disappointed! The dishes have been tweaked ever so slightly, but still follow the same concept, eg cold tapas followed by hot tapas, accompanied by bread & alioli. There was slightly fewer dishes which was a little disappointing, although we both left feeling quite full! Also no olives & corn at the start, which was another missed favourite - perhaps they will consider re-introducing this. Waiting staff no longer all/majority Spanish but they did present dishes in Spanish and explain what they were. Overall very pleased and happy to report this restaurant remains one of our favourites! Look forward to our next visit and excited to bring our 4 yr old foodie along some time!

We chose both the full tapas (hot and cold) and it was delicious. There was no element of rush and we were able to take our time and enjoy our food. This was also accompanied by a tasty jug of sangria (my favourite!). Following our meal we were advised that our table had been booked online however the male staff member working was extremely attentive and reserved the cosy seating area for us to sit and enjoy our drinks. We stayed for a further 2 hours taking in the warm friendly atmosphere. The place was buzzing and the staff did so well to make sure all customers were content and happy. We will definitely be back.

Only mentioning this here as some places can be “funny” about this sort of thing. I arrived a good ten minutes early than my booking but this wasn’t a problem and I was offered a seat and asked if I wanted a drink. Again, mentioned here as not all restaurants are as accommodating. As well as the above, great food, lovely atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff all contributing to a five star review. Already talking about a return visit. Should probably say that we visited on a Tuesday to take advantage of the discount. Which made this particular visit outrageously good value.
